Highlights from the 25th annual Seed, Plant & Scion Exchange!

Thank you for making this year’s exchange such a success! Check out some of the highlights from this year’s event below, and be sure to follow us on Instagram @humboldtpermacultureguild and on Facebook for videos and more coverage! You can also grab our BRAND NEW resource, Growing Apples on the Humboldt Coast on our resource page here!

In the spirit of exchange, you are encouraged to bring seeds, live plants, and/or scion cuttings to share, and take whatever you realistically expect to use.

It is, however, not necessary to bring items to exchange to join in the fun! If you are bringing plant material, we do ask that you provide detailed labels including species and variety name, the year, and location of origin.

We also encourage contributing locally appropriate varieties and focusing on those produced using organic or other sustainable methods. We kindly request that no seeds or other material from invasive plant species be brought to the event.

If you plan to take home seeds or plants, please bring your own envelopes, bags and/or boxes.

Community support

In addition to the annual Seed, Plant & Scion Exchange being entirely volunteer-run, this free community event is made possible by the generous support from grants provided by local organizations and funders.

Donations received during the exchange help to cover event fees, scholarships for workshops, and Guild administrative costs. 10% of the donations received go to pay the Wiyot Honor Tax, in recognition that the exchange takes place annually on the traditional lands of the Wiyot people.

Did you know?

The Seed & Plant Exchange has a long history in Humboldt County!

The very first Seed & Plant Exchange was started in 1998 by a group of local permaculturists passionate about sharing and saving seeds and plants. The exchange was originally held in in Manila in what is now the Redwood Coast Montessori school, from 1998 to 2011.

The exchange became so popular that we had to look for more room! After outgrowing the space in Manila, the event was moved to the Arcata Community Center in 2012, where it has been held yearly ever since (with the exception of 3 years during the COVID pandemic from 2020-2022).

In 2023, when we started things back up, the Guild combined the Scion Exchange (previously held as its own event earlier in the year) with the Seed & Plant Exchange, and thus, we now have the annual Seed, Plant & Scion Exchange to share with you!
